Refinery closure could boost global emissions

REFINING New Zealand has confirmed cost-cutting measures for next year, but says a decision on whether to stop refining operations altogether is still a while away.
The closure of the refinery, at Marsden Point on Whangarei Harbour, could cut the country’s direct greenhouse gas emissions by more than a million tonnes a year, but officials warn it is likely to lead to an overall increase in global emissions.
