AMERICANS need to halve the amount of beef they eat if the country’s agriculture is to become sustainable, a new paper says.
Switching from feedlots to pasture agriculture would free up for human food 32 million hectares of land currently used for growing animal fodder – cutting the use of nitrogen fertiliser and irrigation, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
