HEAVILY redacted documents give little clue what advice the Ministry for the Environment gave the Government on the scrapping of KiwiRail's electric engines.
The State-owned railway company says it is replacing the electric locomotives with diesels on the Main Trunk Line between Hamilton and Palmerston North because the rest of the line isn’t electrified, and having to switch between engines is inefficient.
