Booming dairy industry drives up emissions

METHANE emissions from New Zealand’s national dairy herd have climbed nearly 130 per cent since 1990 as a result of the expansion and intensification of the dairy industry.
Agricultural emissions are the country’s biggest reduction challenge, making up 47.9 per cent of total emissions. And methane from dairy cows is the biggest contributor.
