KiwiRail puts $4.5b tag on electrifying network

ELECTRIFYING the entire North Island rail network would cost more than $4.5 billion, says KiwiRail.
In January, the State-owned rail company announced it would use diesel locomotives on the electrified section of the main trunk, a move expected to increase the company’s carbon emissions by 12,000 tonnes a year.
