News that the world’s remaining carbon budget is half the size it was thought to be should have us drastically cutting carbon emissions now, says a top New Zealand climate scientist.

It was revealed overnight that the global carbon budget (the amount of greenhouse gases that can be released into the atmosphere without pushing global warming above 2deg) is just 1240 billion tonnes – half the 2390 billion tonnes that governments have been working on.
