Treasury’s advice that the Government should stop propping up KiwiRail because it is too expensive fails to take into account the carbon cost of transporting freight by rail.
So Carbon News asked international energy and transport expert Professor Ralph Sims, of Massey University, to crunch the numbers, and he found that even at $20 a tonne, shifting just half the current road freight to rail could save the country $37 million a year:
