NZ gifts Rio Tinto $6m free carbon credits bonus

By editor ADELIA HALLETT.- The company that threatened to leave New Zealand if it introduced the Emissions Trading Scheme has had a $6 million windfall from taxpayers in the form of free carbon credits.
Just-released figures show that the number of free NZUs allocated to New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Ltd (part of Rio Tinto Alcan) jumped from 300,000 in 2012 to more than 1.5 million in 2013.
