The fossil record from oceans around New Zealand reveals a sudden discharge of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at the end of the last ice age, raising the possibility that a similar process may occur as a result of global warming.
"We know that carbon dioxide cycles between the oceans and the atmosphere and that rising global temperatures cause the release of carbon dioxide from the deep ocean into the air," said Dr Phil Shane from the School of Environment at The University of Auckland.
