Thermal ban to send power bills soaring

Power shortages, and energy bills soaring 50%, will be the outcome of the Government’s 10-year ban on new fossil fuel electricity generation plants, the Petroleum Exporting and Production Association of New Zealand (PEPANZ) said yesterday.
Quoting a report it commissioned from the University of Canterbury’s Centre for Advanced Engineering (CAE), PEPANZ chief executive John Pfahlert said the Government’s aim of achieving 90% renewable energy by 2025 risked “exposing the New Zealand public to rising energy costs, increased uncertainty and an inconsistent electricity supply to homes and business around the country.”
