THE GOVERNMENT is expected to update Southland today on talks to stop – or at least delay – the closing of the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter.
The plant is one of the country’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases, but operator Rio Tinto was working on a plan to produce low-emissions aluminium at the site.
