Methane reduction targets are emerging as the most contentious part of the Government’s zero-carbon amendments to the Climate Change Response Act. But it doesn’t have to be that way, says organic farmer and former co-leader of the Green Party JEANETTE FITZSIMONS, who believes farmers can cut methane now while increasing farm profits.
THE ZERO CARBON BILL makes a substantial concession to farmers by treating agricultural (not fossil) methane differently from the longer-lived gases.
Some environmentalists have focused their outrage on this, but there is some scientific basis for it.
