Change rail rules, says trains privatiser

ONE OF THE MEN behind the privatisation of New Zealand’s rail network says the rules need to be changed so that rail can help to cut the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Consultant Murray King says the fact that State-owned KiwiRail has to act like a private company stops it taking the public good, like reducing emissions, into account when it’s making decisions like whether to replace electric locomotives with diesel engines.
