Steel-maker going to Government over ETS

New Zealand Steel is heading for talks with the Government on the emissions trading scheme, saying that it still has serious concerns about the medium-to-long-term impact the scheme could have on its Glenbrook steel mill.
While the company is not threatening to close the mill if the ETS comes into force and has not yet fully examined the implications of changes to the bill, spokesman Tony Wright told Carbon News that the fact remains that the New Zealand mill is likely to be the only one in the world exposed to carbon charges, and that potentially threatens the mill’s viability.
