Why Tiwai stands between us and 100% renewable energy

New Zealand could have 100 per cent renewable electricity generation within a decade if the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter closed.
Analyst Belinda Storey, of Nouveau Eco, says that without the New Zealand Aluminium Smelters plant using 13 per cent of the electricity generated in New Zealand, Genesis Energy’s thermal power stations at Huntly would be unviable, while consented but yet-to-be-built renewable power plants would get the market certainty they needed to go ahead.
