Visitors are arriving by air from all over the world for the Rugby World Cup that kicks off today - and the fuel consumed during these flights will generate large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions, says Carbon Market Solutions.
For example, a return flight from Heathrow, London, to Auckland creates approximately the equivalent to 6.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide per person. Transportation is also required to and from the matches, which adds to the event’s carbon footprint.
