Govt under fire over southern lignite

The Government came under fire in Parliament this week for supporting plans for a lignite mine in Southland while talking about how the world should phase out subsidies for fossil fuels.
Green MP Kennedy Graham said that Solid Energy’s proposed lignite development would qualify for taxpayer-funded carbon credits, and asked how the Government reconciled comments by Finance Minister Bill English that it would support the lignite scheme with Climate Change Minister Nick Smith’s statement that fossil fuel subsidies should be phased out.
