Lawyers call on government to amend law to commit it to 1.5 degrees pathway

Lawyers for Climate Action New Zealand say that if the government is serious about its commitment to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees it has no choice but to amend the Climate Change Response Act.
The High Court yesterday rejected a case brought by LCANZ against the Climate Change Commission and Minister of Climate Change which argued that due to a mathematical error the commission’s recommended carbon budgets for the 2021 to 2030 period were 84 Mt CO2-e. above the 484 Mt that would be consistent with that target using the IPCC’s 1.5 degrees global pathways.
