NSW weighs flogging the family silver

A furore over whether New South Wales (NSW) should privatise its mostly coal-fired electricity generation capacity has erupted in the wake of Kevin Rudd’s federal Labor government announcing it will introduce an emissions trading scheme (ETS) in 2010.
The hard line being taken by Rudd on coal-fired power stations, which generate 80% of Australia’s electricity and half its greenhouse gas emissions, has caught the NSW state government – also Labor – in an embarrassing bind.
