Council targets food waste to cut landfill emissions

Wellington is a step closer to reducing methane emissions from the Southern Landfill, with a trial in Miramar showing separate kerbside collection could reduce landfilled food waste by nearly 40%.
Wellington City Council launched the Para Kai (Food Waste) trial on the Miramar Peninsula in September 2020, with 500 households trialling a weekly kerbside food waste collection service, while another 450 households were composting their food waste in either a compost bin, worm farm, or bokashi system.
