EC eyes market solution to deforestation

The European Commission has called for a target to halt global deforestation by 2030, to be delivered partially through a Global Forest Carbon Mechanism (GFCM), under a post-2012 climate agreement.
Writing on his blog, environment commissioner Stavros Dimas said: “We explicitly recognise that developed countries need to be ready to pay developing countries for the ecosystem services that are provided by their forests.”
