Bluff smelter sale could mean big problems in the south

BHP Billiton’s ever-closer acquisition of Rio Tinto could solve one big and enduring problem ... and create another even bigger one.
The problem it would solve would be the disappearance of the Rio Tinto-owned Bluff aluminium smelter - the single dominant entity in New Zealand power consumption – freeing-up immense hydro-capacity for the rest of industry or for domestic consumption.
