IN 1985, then prime minister, David Lange, memorably quipped that he could smell the uranium on the pro-nuclear televangelist Jerry Falwell’s breath during an Oxford Union debate.

If climate change has an odour in New Zealand it’s that of biogenic methane, or cow burps, and if there’s a chemical element associated with the transition to a green economy its lithium – the main ingredient in the batteries that power the EVs and other technologies required to ditch fossil fuels.
