Changing rainfall could mean more locusts

Research scientist HENRI TONNANG, of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, and his colleagues are trying to get one step ahead of an insect that could devastate food supplies as the climate changes.
ETHIOPIA, Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan are trying to contain the worst locust invasion in more than 70 years.
The locusts have destroyed vegetation – especially staple cereal crops, legumes and pastures – resulting in huge economic losses. The World Bank estimates that these losses could reach $US8.5 billion by the end of the year.
