Biochar golden opportunity for New Zealand, says expert

New Zealand is squandering opportunities to use carbon sequestered under the Emissions Trading Scheme to improve soils, says bioeconomy consultant Dr Michael Lakeman.
“We have policy initiatives that strongly incentivise planting carbon, but we do nothing about incentivising what we do with the carbon once the trees have captured it, other than cutting it down and selling it into traditional markets,” he told a Bioenergy Association online seminar yesterday.
