Emissions slashed, but scientists issue warning

THE GLOBAL economic shutdown caused by the covid-19 pandemic cut the world’s greenhouse gas emissions by almost 18 million tonnes a day – and the second-highest rate of reduction was in New Zealand.
While scientists are welcoming evidence than emissions can be turned around, they are now warning they could climb to higher rates than ever if countries throw out climate policies in pursuit of economic recovery.
