Scientists claim breakthrough on gut bacteria

SCIENTISTS have used “directed evolution” to turn gut bacteria into a carbon dioxide-munching machine in what is being called a step towards carbon-neutral production of food, fuels, and biochemicals.
Researchers in Israel created and evolved Escherichia coli bacteria, switching it from using sugar to grow, to using carbon dioxide, much like a plant does.
