CARBON CRISIS: Our emissions up a whopping 56%

New Zealand’s net greenhouse gas emissions – the amount it actually contributes to damaging the climate – rose a whopping 56.7 per cent over 24 years in which it was supposed to be cutting emissions, new Government data shows.

The latest Greenhouse Gas Inventory, for the period from 1990 (the Kyoto Protocol base year) to 2014, shows that the country’s net emissions (total emissions minus what has been stored in trees and soils) rose from 36.9 million tonnes to 56.9 million tonnes.
