Among the bills to pass into law in Parliament’s recent Urgency session was the extension of the penalty transition regime for small forestry owners who remove trees.
Under the Emissions Trading Scheme those who cut down forests and fail to pay NZUs pay a penalty of three times the current carbon price. This was set when NZUs were about $20, they now are above $85.
