The tug Maui was built by the Whangarei Engineering Company in 1970 for the Taranaki Harbour Board. She is still working in Auckland.

Whangarei Engineering Company – better known as Weco – was once the country’s biggest shipyard.

Not only did it build tugs, naval ships, fishing boats and even a replica of 18th century sailing ship the Bounty, it also built a workforce of skilled people that founded New Zealand’s modern boat-building industry.
