What the parties say about climate change

THREE-AND-A-BIT weeks out from the general election, what do we know about the parties’ approach to climate change?

National, Labour, the Green Party and Act have not yet released their policies, but we ran a ruler over their public statements, along with the policies that have been released by New Zealand First, the Maori Party and The Opportunities Party, to look at some key issues:


  • What they would do with the Emissions Trading Scheme.
  • Their approach to dealing with biological emissions from agriculture, which make up nearly half New Zealand’s total emissions.
  • Whether they support the establishment of a climate commission, carbon budgeting and the proposed Zero Carbon Act.
  • The emissions reduction targets they would set for New Zealand.
