Marine heatwaves the new norm, say scientists

Hauraki Gulf penguins in trouble


THE MARINE heatwave which has seen penguins, prions and other New Zealand birds dying this summer is part of a new “normal” caused by climate change, scientists say.

Research published today in Nature Communications says that marine heatwaves have become more frequent and intense around the world over the past century as a direct result of warming oceans.
